Returning Results to the Field
Our research in Amazonas, Peru depends on rich partnerships with rural campesino communities at field sites. We try to give back in any way possible and find the most rewarding and effective approach to be education programs that communicate our science, including workshops in avian ecology and conservation for local school groups and visual aids, such as bird posters and species lists, that we distribute to local landholders. We are now focusing on returning our scientific results to the field in adapted formats translated into Spanish. In summer 2022 we returned to our field sites and distributed Decision Support Tools that distilled basic results regarding the conservation of birds in agricultural landscapes. This work is done in collaboration with the Amazonas Network of Private Conservation Areas (Red AMA) as part of the project Aves de Los Bosques Montanos Peruanos.

Museum Outreach
I was extremely excited to develop an exhibit for the public facing part of the Florida Museum of Natural History. The exhibit focuses on our fieldwork in Peru and how avian visual systems can be used to predict species sensitivity to habitat disturbance.

I also helped to develop the bird component of the Florida Museum sponsored program “Museum in the Parks”. This involved hosting two videos that emphasize the utility of museum collections for ecological research.
